An Onion Bloom Sprinkled With Salt and Placed on a Round White PlateDry Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 2 1/2 cups of flour
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 1 cup of water

Slice the large sweet onion into evenly spaced segments going down to the base but leaving a half inch or so of solid uncut base to keep the fingers connected. In a large bowl whisk together the dry ingredients. Dredge the onion into and through the whisked dry ingredients. Whisk together in a second bowl the wet ingredients and then submerge the onion in the wet mixture.

Pour the remaining flour mixture over the onion and move to the refrigerator.

Heat corn oil in a frying pot to 400 degrees, carefully lower the onion cut side down into the oil for 3 minutes then flip for 3 more minutes.
